What Makes Love True | New York Romance

Love is found in a little blue box.

Of course I don’t truly believe that but I think it’s fair to say that there are few girls who wouldn’t swoon if presented with their own little package in pantone 1837 by the one they love.  Tiffany & Co have a very sweet little website called What Makes Love True, featuring real love stories, Tiffany’s ideas for romantic spots for two in NYC (in case you happen to find yourself there), romantic inspirations and a free download of a Joshua Radin cover of You’re the First, the Last, My Everything (first dance/wedding entrance song possibility?) as well as some beautiful photography…. it should give the poet’s souls out there their daily dose of romance, whether they get a little blue box of their own or not!

Guy and Kate | Wedding

I knew Guy and Kate’s wedding was going to be beautiful.  They are wonderful, they have wonderful, creative ideas, they are so well organised – these things all make for incredible weddings.  Some things cannot be organised.  The weather is one of those things, the morning of the wedding dawned not as a summer’s day but more like October; it was windy, it was raining… it was all the weathers people hope not to have on their wedding day and certainly could not have been any more different to the weather we had for their pre wedding shoot.  It didn’t matter.  The fact is that when two people as fantastic and in love as these two get married, the weather can do what it wants to, the day is going to be beautiful regardless!

All the locations for this wedding were within a five minute drive of each other so we were able to visit everyone for some images of their preparations before the ceremony.  We went to the girls first where a very calm Kate showed me her flowers, dress and shoes (beautiful shoes… beautiful everything but I did love the shoes!) and introduced me to her wedding party.  En route to the boys, we stopped in at the church.  It was so busy!  At first I presumed that all the people were eager wedding guests but it turns out that the St Just-in-Roseland church might be the most visited little church in Cornwall, rightly so too, it is so pretty and in stunning surroundings.  After photographing Guy’s last minute preparations and the boys’ departure for the church, it was back to Kate to photograph her getting ready.

It was time to head to the church.  Tucked away in it’s own gardens and right on the water, neither the rain nor the blue scaffolding on the tower could take away from how beautiful it was.  Due to the scaffolding the side entrance was used for the wedding, Anna Sawle had worked her floral magic once again and decorated it and the church with peonies, roses, sweet peas and all things romantic and “English Country Garden”, matching the over all look of the wedding perfectly.  The ushers did a fantastic job of getting everyone into the church without getting too wet and with the arrival of the bride the personal and moving ceremony began.

After the ceremony the wedding party and guests headed outside and braved the rain for a few group images including one of everyone, the guests were incredibly gracious as they battled with the elements and their umbrellas.  We grabbed a couple of photographs of Guy and Kate by the water and then everyone made a dash for the reception venue – a marquee on Guy’s parents’ property.  For the first time ever, plans for further portraits of the newly weds had to be shelved due to the unfriendly weather conditions – we tried but it just wasn’t to be and Guy and Kate made an executive decision to go and join the celebrations and start the party!  It was a good call!

The reception was full of creative and fun details, from personalised signs to the sweetie bar to peonies on napkins and heart shaped, chalkboard place cards (with handy peg attached meaning guests could wear them and other guests could know who they were sitting with or talking to), from colour theme matching cocktails to vintage teacups and sugar cubes with pink hearts on them – this wedding had it all and then some and the thought and time that had been put into it was apparent everywhere you looked.  About Taste were the caterers and did a fabulous job both during the drinks reception and the wedding breakfast where Guy and Kate had opted for “interactive eating” (I don’t think that is it’s official name but it is the name I have given it for now!).  At the start of the main course the men were asked to look under their seats, one man at each table had a gift which turned out to be an apron to protect their wedding finery when they carved the beef and served it to those at their table – a great way to kick start mingling.  The wedding cake was a delicious looking chocolate affair and once it had been cut, each table was bought a single tier version which was then cut by one of the ladies at each table (who had been provided with a frilly pinny in the same way as the men) and served with berries and cream.  Fabulous and so delicious!

On into the night and after the speeches, including the Best Man’s which was given alongside a very funny Power Point presentation, the bride and groom proved themselves to be rather impressive on the dance floor during their first dance before being joined by some of the most enthusiastic friends and family of all time!

What a wedding!  Even with the rain and the scaffolding, it was perfect and the greatest start to two wonderful people’s married life together.  Congratulations Guy and Kate, may you have many perfect days together – I know you will.

Pete and Sharon | Pre Wedding

Having spent a couple of hours with Pete and Sharon for their pre wedding photography session, I just know that their wedding is going to be a blast.  They are so much fun; Sharon laughs constantly, Pete tries his hardest not to which just makes Sharon (and, on this occasion, myself) laugh more!  We were laughing from the outset, we had arranged to meet where my parents live to get some images by the river before heading to the beach – this also allowed me to leave the baby with my mum while we headed off for a couple of hours.  Pete and Sharon beat me there and came over to the car just as I was removing my daughter who happened to have filled her nappy in the most spectacular way, covering not only herself but her car seat too.  Oh the horror!  I am now at work and holding a tiny girl who is covered in baby poo.  What does one do in these situations?  Laugh.  That is all that can be done.  In fact, here is my advice for anyone finding themselves in a similar situation: you laugh (and hope that your clients are laughing too), you apologise, you excuse yourself and your baby for a moment, wrangle your baby out of her clothes with the help of your wonderful mother, thank your mother for being extra amazing and shooing you out of the house insisting she can manage, pray that you have clients as gracious as Pete and Sharon and then laugh again.

Anyway, baby emergency over we started our session properly.  I had so much fun with these two and am really looking forward to their wedding day.  My daughter will not be there… Nana will look after her at home, that way there can be no last minute nappy emergency.  Sigh.  We live and learn, I have learnt and thankfully have improved a great deal at the “baby hand over” since this session!

Enough of this, some images:

Sharon’s engagement ring: you know you’re onto a winner when your man remembers the ring you fell in love with in California and moves heaven and earth to get it for you – not a similar one, the actual one!

Vintage Magpie | Bespoke Wedding Bouquets

One of my brides last year carried a beautiful bouquet, not of flowers but of buttons and jewellery and beads and sparkle.  I will say right from the beginning that I do not know who made it (I’m sure I must have asked but I was about a million weeks pregnant at the time and can’t remember) so I won’t put any images of it into this post but it was stunning and fit in perfectly with her winter themed wedding.

There is a maker of such magnificent creations that I have been watching for a while (and by watching I meaningwebweb visiting regularly and blog stalking obsessively – okay, maybe not that bad but you get the idea!), her name is Emma Bakker and she has been running Vintage Magpie since 2006.  I think it was the name that grabbed my attention at first (not “Emma”, Vintage Magpie), I must have seen it somewhere and clicked on a link but after that I was fascinated by the love and attention to detail that she puts into her work – you can tell when someone is doing exactly what they should be and Emma is.  In the last while Vintage Magpie has started a “ready made” collection, opening her beautiful work up to more brides while still offering her incredible bespoke service which sees bride’s heirloom jewellery and other special things woven into bouquets filled with memories and sentiment which will last a lifetime and will surely be treasured long into the future.  Imagine your granddaughter carrying a bouquet designed for you, containing a broach worn by your grandmother or great-grandmother on her wedding day!

One final thing, Vintage Magpie began after Emma had a dream in which she saw a bride carrying a “bouquet of sparkle” – she actually is following her dreams!  Amazing, love her, love what she does.

Be sure to visit www.vintagemagpie.co.uk and read her blog too to see her most recent work (these images came from there – in case you thought I’d photographed heaps of weddings using her bouquets at the same venue!).

Edit:  I completely forgot to add a link to this wonderful post…. which I’m pretty sure sums up all that is wonderful about these pieces!

Emma {Vintage Magpie} - Thank you so much for your lovely and sweet words about my little Vintage Magpie. It makes my day to have wonderful people like you writing fab posts like this!! I'm so glad you follow my love and can see exactly what i see in them....they are beauties...but im VERY biased! Thank you xxx

Jude - Great post! I'm the bride from the last link you posted ("this wonderful post"). I canot praise the Magpie's work high enough. For any bride thinking of getting a bouquet from Emma, I can guarantee it will give you memories, and an heirloom, to last a lifetime. One of my main reasons for having a Vintage Magpie bouquet (aside how fabulous it looked!) was the link it gave me to members of my family who couldn't be at my wedding - particularly my adored mum. My mum passed away a few weeks ago and looking at my bouquet, which houses some of her most treasured and personal things, gives me comfort every day. You simply can't put a price on that.

Guy and Kate | Pre Wedding

Guy and Kate are one of those couples that make your heart happy.

We met at one of my favourite places in Cornwall on an absolutely beautiful day for their pre wedding photography session and we spent a couple of hours getting to know each other a little more and documenting their love for each other as they countdown to their wedding day.  They had warned me that they are the couple that friends roll their eyes at for being so in love and affectionate with each other… and it’s true, these two are over-the-top in love (as if such a thing could exist!) but thankfully I am an incurable romantic and such things make me smile not roll my eyes or feel queasy!

Guy and Kate have a great love story, it could probably be made into a film!  As it’s not my story to tell, I won’t share it on the blog except for one part that I feel I needs to be told because it is just so sweet.  Guy had asked Kate’s dad for his daughter’s hand in marriage (it’s good to do things properly boys!) and was intending to propose while they were away skiing with friends, Kate’s mum knew about the plans and was so worried that she wouldn’t be able to hide her excitement and would make Kate suspicious that something was going on that she pretended to be unwell – yep, she “took to her bed”, feigning illness until Kate and Guy had left for the airport!  Fantastic, got to love mums.

On to some images:

Amy and Adam | Wedding

At a time of year when the weather could have been at it’s most horrendous, Amy and Adam lucked out big time and chose the most glorious day for their wedding.  Things were calm when I arrived at the bridal preparation room, hair was up, makeup on and Amy had the air of a film star from yesteryear as she waited with her bridesmaid and sister in law to put on her amazing wedding gown.

Just waiting to get married…!

After a couple of “practice runs” Amy had been laced into her dress and was ready to go, her look was elegant and very glamorous and her room was beautiful with great light – bonus for me!

I love this one, so elegant.

Love the feathers!

A great window to strike a pose in!

On her way downstairs as a bride to see her parents…

And then it was time to head off to the church.  Amy’s mother was wearing the most incredible mother of the bride dress and her niece was the sweetest little thing with her “fur” bolero and her flower wand!

Leaving for the church

Just before getting into the wedding car – so excited!

I always love the moments just before the bride and her father walk into the church.

Love this moment too – look how happy Adam looks.

We’re married!

In the VW about to head off for photographs, these two are so sweet!

See?!

It is so wonderful when a couple builds time for their wedding photography into their day, they get some time away from the bustle of the wedding together  and we have more opportunities to capture images they will love.  They also get to hang out with me (that’s a joke) and in this case, watch me climb and balance pregnantly on rocks…. what a treat!

So, photo time over, we headed off to the reception to join the festivities, I got to ride in the passenger seat of the VW – so much fun!  Amy and Adam, you guys are wonderful, I hope you continue to be as in love and happy as you were on this day and that you share many fantastic years together. x

Baby Evelyn

This is just a quick post (as my posts probably will be for a while as they will mostly be typed one handed due to baby holding!) to show you the little lady who caused so many problems over recent months – pictures have been requested by quite a few brides and I’m only too happy to show her off!  Evelyn has stolen our hearts and is an absolute joy, definitely worth all the trouble!

Again, to those who were affected by my pregnancy complications, thank you.  Your understanding is so appreciated, what a special year of brides 2010 was.  x

Melissa - What a magical little lady! Big congrats to you. Catch up when you get a sec. love Mr & Mrs S!

Wedding Photography Cornwall | Melissa and Iain

I first met Melissa and Iain three days before their wedding, these two are fabulous, very busy people – Melissa met with me in the middle of fitting a shower at her mum’s guest house (yes, fitting a shower three days before her wedding!  It was for wedding guests I believe) and Iain joined us once the job was finished.  We talked for hours around their kitchen table; about their wedding and about just about anything else you can imagine, it was wonderful.

The day of the wedding started sunny and bright and as Trusty Assistant and I headed down to the other end of Cornwall I was excited to see what the day had in store.  I found melissa at her kitchen table enjoying a meal with her family and close friends before the ceremony and set about photographing a few of the day’s details starting with her beautiful bouquet which had a vintage feel.  The meal finished, the laid back little cottage soon began to bustle with preparations as Melissa changed into her wedding dress and the wedding car arrived – a brand new, white London taxi!

Melissa’s bouquet, including peonies (my favourite!).

Melissa with her bridesmaid and cousin.

Ready to go in to the church.

Melissa walked down the aisle to the church organ and a trumpeter which sounded fabulous (and brought about my “quote of the day”).

I was fairly restricted as to where I was allowed to be in the church but the light in there was beautiful.

I love it when the guests sing along heartily (this was a special guest who had come a long way to be at the wedding – look at her amazing earrings!).  This wedding ceremony also featured some incredible musicians and soloists.

A kiss at the door – leaving the church as husband and wife.

Confetti moment!

The bridesmaids.

By the time we got to the beach for photographs, the weather had started to change but the rain held off for long enough for us to spend some time getting some images…. I really wanted to do a blog post of pictures of these two laughing, they do that a lot and I hope they always will but I have selected a few other images not dedicated to giggling!  Great car isn’t it?!

A quick stroll down to the water ended in Melissa paddling, the changing weather made for a wonderfully refreshing 2o minutes on the beach.

I love this image.

The wedding reception was in a traditional marquee on kitted out with bunting and fairy lights, there were great speeches, food by The Little Cornish Curry Company and then music, fantastic music, provided by the groom himself with help from his amazing band.  I don’t think anyone noticed that it was by this point pouring with rain outside… it changed some of our photo plans which was a shame but in the big scheme of things not important at all.  This was a full on celebration and being there made me so happy – I think everyone in attendance felt the same way.

The marquee during the speeches.

I would just like to mention how hard it was to stand next to this cake during the speeches, it looked and smelled incredible and the temptation to break off a bit of the chocolate was definitely there… obviously I didn’t though!

The boys from The Little Cornish Curry Company putting the final touches to the rice – a fantastic choice for a wedding, great food and wonderful staff going out of their way to look after guests.

First dance to Boogie Shoes, these two could really move!

Okay girls, imagine that your new husband is not only in a great band (and I really mean great) but he serenades you with Isn’t She Lovely as a surprise at your wedding reception…. that is what Melissa got and is what is happening in this image.

There’s that trumpet again!  I really like this image and I have to get a link up for the band because they truly were amazing (all nine – I think there were nine – of them).

The party all got a bit much for this little one!

Unlike Melissa’s cousins who were still going strong when I made my leave!  Ha!!!

Melissa and Iain, thank you for letting me be part of your celebrations and for everything since then, keep laughing and enjoy your lives together. x
